Richard Leon Dawes
Visitation for Richard Leon Dawes will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at the Sien-Shelton Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at the Lawnwood Freewill Baptist Church in Tulsa with Rev. Steve Loveless officiating. Interment will be Tuesday, May 5, 2020 in the Osage Gardens Cemetery under the direction of the Sien-Shelton Funeral Home.
Richard Leon Dawes, age 84, of Jenks went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 2, 2020 in Tulsa.
Richard Leon Dawes was born March 22nd, 1936 in Yale, Oklahoma to Theodore Alvin and Zella Mae (Gatewood) Dawes. He grew up and received his education in Skiatook where he graduated with the Class of 1955. From there, he completed trade school to become a certified electrical contractor. Leon owned and operated Cherokee Electric in Tulsa from 1976 to 2013. He was a member of National Electrical Contractors Association and held many leadership positions throughout those years including being President of the Association. After retiring in 2013, Leon became the Chapter manager of NECA. His hard work and devotion to his field are evident in the way he gave of himself, even teaching code to hundreds of students throughout the years. HIs legacy will live on through the many ways he impacted and served others. Leon even traveled to Switzerland for instruction on wiring the newspaper presses at the Tulsa World. They were the first of this kind to be installed in the United States. He was also a member of the IBEW Local 584 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Leon had many hobbies..fishing, camping and hunting, but his favorite was traveling throughout the United States and even Canada with the love of his life, Glenda on his motorcycle.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents: Theodore and Zella Dawes, brother: Charles, three sisters: Juanita, Wanda and Imogene and two daughters: Susan Dawes and Sheree Taft.
Leon is survived by his companion of thirty-nine years: Glenda Smedley. His daughter, Shelley Morton and her husband Gene. His son Shaun Dawes and his daughter, Shannon Ledford and her husband Michael. He is also survived by Darrell Smedley, Lance Smedley and wife Jennifer and Craig Smedley and wife Monica. Grandchildren, Nicholas Hembree, Andrea Hembree, Skyler Cooper, Amanda Jones, Shelsey Dawes, Hannah Ledford, Hayley Ledford, Hayden Ledford, Hudson Ledford, Kaylee Smedley, Brogan Smedley, Landon Smedley, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
