Walter Jones Jr. passed away at home in the loving care of his family and hospice on November 2, 2013 at the age of 79 from pancreatic cancer.
Walter was born on May 10, 1934 at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. to Walter and Agnes (Huber) Jones. Walter attended school in Arlington Virginia. Walter’s first job was in a Jewish delicatessen at the age of 10 and he also painted houses with his grandfather. Wally’s grandfathers favorite saying was “Hard work never killed anyone” and Wally was always trying to prove him wrong! He started work for American Airlines in August of 1952 at Washington National Airport. He also worked part time in a restaurant which is where he met his future wife Elaine.
On August 8, 1954 Walter was united in marriage to Elaine Joyce Roschewski. Wally and Elaine spent over 57 years of marriage together. To this union were born three children, Lillian of Skiatook Oklahoma, Randy of Villa Rica Georgia and Chris of Sharpsburg Georgia. Their first child Lillian was born on his birthday in May of 1955. In 1962 Wally transferred with American Airlines to Memphis Tennessee and continued working in various customer service positions. One of Wally's fond memories while working in Memphis was handling the early travel of Elvis Presley before Elvis got his own airplane. In 1982 Wally transferred with American Airlines to Tulsa Oklahoma and made his final residence in Skiatook Oklahoma. He retired from American on December 31, 1990 with 38 years but never quit working.
Wally was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Agnes and John V. McGhee and his father and stepmother Walter and Alta Jones.
His is survived by his wife Elaine; daughter Lillian and son- in- law David Kress, son Randy and daughter –in –law Jeannie and son Chris and daughter –in-law Lisa; six grandchildren: grandson Matthew and his wife Heather of Villa Rica, GA., grandson John of Glenpool, OK., grandson Daniel and his wife Lindsay of Tulsa OK., grandson Mitchell of Winterville, N.C., granddaughter Carissa of Asheville, N.C., grandson Anthony of Sharpsburg, GA., 2 great grandchildren : granddaughters Gracie and Maya Jones; sister Betty Lou McLaughlin of Buffalo, N.Y., brother David Jones of Choctaw OK., sister Georgia and husband Bob Walsh of Alexandria, VA., plus nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Wally was always a house painter and continued his trade with his wife by his side most of the time. They both painted into their late 70's. Wally also loved cutting the grass on his tractor and splitting fire wood. Wally’s other passion was pheasant hunting. Wally made an annual trip in early November to Southwest Nebraska for over 50 years faithfully chasing roosters. He was known for his generosity and sense of humor.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior organization in memory of Walter Jones.
Memorial services for Wally will be held Friday morning, Nov 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Owasso Oklahoma, with Pastor Mark Neumann officiating. A private family internment will be held at a later date in Wauneta Nebraska.
Memorial services and cremation are under the direction of the Sien-Shelton Funeral Home.
