Viola Laree Shelton Nail, age 88, passed away Saturday March 18, 2023, at her loving home in Skiatook with her daughters by her side.
Vi was born March 21, 1934, to Virgil and May Shelton. She was the sixth of 12 children born and raised in Skiatook, Oklahoma. At age 18, Vi and the love of her life Wayne William Nail eloped on July 3, 1952 and were married in front of the Justice of the Peace in Jay, Oklahoma. They made their home in Jay, Oklahoma before moving to Afton, Oklahoma where they worked for Jim and Francis Swinney, the owners of Monkey Island Resort on Grand Lake. Wayne took care of the maintenance and upkeep of the Marina while Vi ran the small café and took care of the 12 cabins.
In 1959, they moved back to Skiatook where they began their family and raised three daughters, Venus Lavern, Vicki Lynn and Vonda Lea. Vi was a homemaker and cared for children in her home, while raising her 3 girls. From 1982 to 1995, Wayne and Vi owned and operated the child care center Blue Skies and Rainbows where Vi took care of the kitchen. She fed and loved hundreds of children in the Skiatook area.
Vi and Wayne were members of the Church of Christ. They raised their daughters at the Collinsville and Skiatook congregations. Vi taught bible classes, her favorite age was the nursery class where she could love on all the babies. Vi and Wayne loved to host get-togethers in their home where Vi always had plenty of food and desserts, especially her homemade pies. Any church fellowship wasn’t complete unless it included Vi’s pies.
She loved her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and they will continue to cherish the many memories of her love for the Lord, her cooking, her desserts and her legacy of hospitality she shared with everyone she met.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and May Shelton; her husband Wayne Nail; her siblings – Dorlean Bearden, Calvin Shelton, Kenneth Shelton, Virgil (Cub) Shelton, George A.
