Roger Lynn Cunningham, known affectionately as Roger to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on May 18, 1938, in Japton, Arkansas to Commadore Milton and Opal (Treece) Cunningham. Roger's life was marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a remarkable career in engineering. Roger's early years in Arkansas laid a strong foundation for his values and work ethic. He graduated from Bentonville High School at the age of 16, and his commitment to his nation was evident when he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age 17. His service was characterized by honor and dedication, receiving his honorable discharge after 10 years of service. During his time in the Navy, he married the love of his life, Georgia Sue Dunlap, where they met at a bus stop in Tulsa and 2 weeks later on June 30, 1956, in Nash, Arkansas they were married for 69 years. Together, they built a life filled with love and moved through various cities, settling in Skiatook in 2020. Professionally, Roger was highly respected in his role as an Engineer for the Telex Corporation. His colleagues and peers recognized him for his ingenuity and problem-solving skills, which contributed significantly to the success of the company. Roger's faith played a central role in his life. A devout member of the Catholic Church, he lived his beliefs through his actions and interactions with others. His hobbies and interests were a reflection of his multifaceted personality. An adept mechanic and woodworker, Roger found joy in restoring and creating, bringing new life to objects that others might overlook. His gardens were a testament to his patience and connection to nature, flourishing under his attentive care. His wife, Georgia Cunningham, was Roger's world. His love for her was profound and unwavering, and together they shared a life full of cherished moments until her passing. Roger was also a family man through and through, his love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. He imparted his love of the outdoors to them, often taking them hunting and fishing, sharing stories and teaching life lessons along the way. Roger's companion, his dog Peppy, was a constant source of joy and comfort to him. Their bond was a beautiful example of the unconditional love between a man and his dog.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Commadore Milton and Opal (Treece) Cunningham; his wife, Georgia Cunningham; brothers, Pete Cunningham and Bradley Cunningham; and sister, Elvada Barham, Roger leaves behind a legacy of love and integrity.
He is survived by his children, Tony Cunningham, Denise Cunningham Oliver, Kevin Cunningham, and Robert Cunningham; his sister, Yevon Wist; brother, Ronnie Cunningham; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a tapestry of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Roger's life was a journey marked by commitment, service, and an unwavering love for his family. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his stories will be told for generations to come. A man of honor and compassion, Roger Lynn Cunningham's legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
