Skiatook

Jake Newton Sumner, Jr. was born September 30, 1937, to Jake Newton Sumner and Ethel Elizabeth Echols Sumner in Bartlesville, OK.  He was one of eleven children and was the first of seven sons born to this union after four daughters.  Jake joined the Navy at the age of seventeen and went around the world more than once during his four years of service.  He met Brenda Lynn Blake at the age of 18 and after a lengthy correspondence they fell in love and were married on January 3, 1959, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, OK.  He was employed at American Airlines where he designed and was an Auto Pilot and Navigation Systems Instructor for about 8 years where he achieved a management level position.  During this time two sons were born to this union, Alan and Scott.
On February 13, 1966, he came to the Lord and surrendered to the will of God.  In 1968 they left the new house and car and great job to follow God to Southwestern Assembly of God Bible College in Waxahachie, Texas.  He preached his first sermon on April 7, 1968.  While at Bible School he felt the call of God to missions in Latin American countries and began more than Fifty years of taking the glorious Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to the hurting and dying of the world. He ministered in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Nicaragua, and Honduras as well as England and all over the United States.  His only desire was to be used by God and counted it a privilege to labor for the Master.
Even though he was battling late-stage dementia, he would even preach from his bed to the hospital staff. He never lost his sense of humor and relished our laughter at his antics.
In addition to his family he loved his PT Cruiser, Bluebell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and Black Licorice!
The Lord called him home on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda and two sons, Alan Sumner and wife Paula, Scott Sumner and wife Bonita, four siblings; Evelyn Revard of Dewey, OK, James “Chico” Sumner of Gore, OK, Jerry Sumner of Ochelata, OK, Jesse Sumner of Ramona, OK, six granddaughters; Hannah and husband Sam McCoy of Arbuckle, CA, Rachel and husband Jacob Vaughn of McKee, KY, Elizabeth and husband Paul Dunn of Martinsville, VA, Ruth and husband Jeff Schneider of La Jose, PA, Rhoda and Sarah Sumner of Honduras, five great grandchildren; Adalynn McCoy, Kaylee McCoy, Mariah McCoy, Grayson Vaughn and Kari McCoy. and numerous family and friends.
