Elnora Ann Supernaw, known affectionately as Tut to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, in her hometown of Skiatook, Oklahoma. Born on February 25, 1935, to Mary Thelma (Maloy) and Lawrence Anderson Supernaw Sr, in the same close-knit community, Elnora's life was a testament to her enduring love for her family, heritage, and the town that shaped her.
Elnora was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Mary Supernaw, her brother, LA Supernaw Jr., and her half-sister, Patricia Supernaw Schwab.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for her half-brother, John B. Supernaw, sister-in-law, Judy Supernaw, nephew, Larry Supernaw and his wife Cathy, her nieces, Christine Supernaw and Wena Supernaw and her husband, Mark Turner, her great-nieces, Lida Supernaw and Mary Supernaw, as well as a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Growing up in Skiatook, Elnora was a standout student, graduating second in her class with the Class of 1954. She was not only an academic achiever but also a leader on the basketball court, serving as the Girls Basketball Captain in her senior year. Her passion for sports was a constant throughout her life, often recalling fond memories from her time on the court. Elnora's career was as dynamic as her personality. After spending a couple of years in California, she returned to Tulsa, where she embarked on a successful career with the Ladish Company in 1958. She worked in various locations, including Tulsa, Houston, and Russellville, Arkansas, eventually retiring as Internal Sales Manager. In 1995, she made the full-circle journey back to her roots in Skiatook, where she continued to be an active and beloved member of the community. A voracious reader, Elnora found joy in the simple pleasure of reading Tulsa World every day. She was also a connoisseur of mail-order catalogs, which she referred to as her "wish books," reading them from cover to cover with delight. Elnora's interests extended far beyond the page, as she held a deep reverence for her Indian heritage. She was a vibrant presence on the Pow Wow trail, where she once graced the festivities as a Homecoming Princess. Her involvement in cultural traditions like shell shaking and stomp dancing reflected her commitment to celebrating her roots. An ardent fan of sports, Elnora channeled her love for competition into avid support for O.U. football and women's softball. Her coaching skills were honed under the guidance of her brother, with whom she co-coached a girls basketball team famously known as the "Purple People Eaters." Her enthusiasm for the game was infectious, and her strategies on the court were as sharp as her wit. Elnora was also well known at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Skiatook where she was a lifelong Catholic and member. Elnora's dedication to the Kihekah Steh Powwow Club was unwavering, attending Powwows regularly and being honored as an elder honoree in 2020. Her presence at these events was a source of joy and inspiration to many, as she celebrated the traditions that were so dear to her heart.
Elnora's life was a beautiful tapestry of commitment to her family, her culture, and her community. Her spirited personality, kindness, and unwavering support of those around her will be sorely missed. As we say farewell to Elnora Ann Supernaw, we celebrate the remarkable journey of a woman who lived life with passion, grace, and a deep-seated love for her heritage. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
