Doris Venable, age 83, of Skiatook, OK, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, October 14, 2021, in Tulsa, OK. Doris was born February 27, 1938, in Seminole, Oklahoma to Tomie Ogle Burgess West and Verna Deleta (Campbell) West. She attended high school in Pawhuska, OK. She was very skilled and beautiful on roller skates. One of her favorite family memories was dancing on skates with her mother, dad, and siblings in the days when roller rinks were the ‘IN Thing.’ She moved to Pryor where she married Carl Venable on November 28, 1958, in Miami, OK. and they soon made Pryor their home for many years. After the births of their two sons, she was mostly a stay-at-home mom and homemaker in their early years. During their years in Pryor she worked as a dental assistant, sewed for Cherokee Togs, taught paint classes, and retired from many successful years as manager of Peters Department Store. Doris was very active in the Pryor Chamber of Commerce, both speaking for and working for the good of the city and its businesses. She was a member of the Pryor’s First Baptist Church and had much joy in teaching a children’s Sunday School class there for ten years. Doris was an avid artist and crafter. She loved art and created many beautiful works in doll making, painting, ceramics, quilting, and crocheting. Among her other talents, she laid bricks and rocks with great skill. She helped build three different homes, helping with the plumbing, wiring, painting, papering, doing all the tiling, and whatever else was needed. They had moved to Skiatook in 2002, and built their home. Later she was instrumental in building and caring for their large koi pond. Just a few months ago, with help, she built the falls that flows into the pond, concreting in the native rocks. She was a hard worker and would tackle about anything she felt worthwhile. Like Jesus, Doris loved people more than anything. She loved to help out anyway she could. In among all life’s happenings, she took care of her mother for 16 years. Her love of family held us all together. As a gifted hostess, she enjoyed having family and friends in their home for holidays or just having folks visit. She made time to be outdoors, doing yard work or planting and tending her flowers, going on trail rides with her horse, camping and hiking, traveling by car, plane, or even trains, and she made life an adventure. Continuing until her death, Doris was a singer. She was the soprano in her family’s ministry, One Accord Ministries; a ministry of song and testimony for the Lord that also included son, Terry, and husband, Carl. She loved the travel, meeting new people, and making new friends, but mostly she loved singing and testifying for her Lord Jesus. She had a gift to make people laugh and her sense of humor lightened the load for many. Her dedication of service to the Lord won souls to Christ and encouraged believers. Besides singing in her own family ministry, she has also been closely involved in helping the Joyce Johnson’s Ministries for the last twenty years. Doris wrote many of her own songs. As long as she had enough breath, she sang and beautifully. Carl and Doris have always been a team, always together whether work, play, or ministry. She was a member of Speak Life Fellowship in Owasso, OK. Doris was a hugger, a peacemaker, an extremely loyal and loving friend, honest, dedicated, clever, funny, encouraging, and wise. She so loved her family that we all felt her special attention. Doris is preceded in death by: father and mother, Tomie and Verna West; brothers, Autry Wayne West and Vernon T. West. She is survived by: husband, Carl E. Venable, sons, Terry Ray Venable and Anthony Wayne (Tony) Venable; brother, Benjamin L. West and wife Jeannie Doss West; sisters, Juanita D. Presnall, Sandra J. (Sande) Sears, and Mary Jane Mashunkashey; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
