We come together today to celebrate the life and legacy of Bobby Gene Kehler, known affectionately to friends and family as Bob. Born on December 13, 1927, in Skiatook, Oklahoma, Bob was a man whose life was deeply rooted in the town he loved. He passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024, in the same community where he was born, leaving behind a legacy of service, music, and community engagement.
Raised in Skiatook, Bob received his education in the local schools before answering the call of duty by entering the United States Army on February 4, 1946. He served his country with distinction and was honorably discharged on August 12, 1947, after achieving the rank of Sergeant. Love blossomed shortly thereafter, and on September 4, 1948, Bob married his sweetheart, Leota Marie Sneed. Their union was not only a personal partnership but also a professional one, as they worked side by side for 26 years at Bob's Skelly Service Station. Bob's commitment to his faith was evident when he was baptized at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Skiatook in 1972. His dedication to his community was unparalleled; he served as the Mayor of Skiatook for an unprecedented 14 years and was instrumental in starting the Skiatook ambulance service, ensuring the health and safety of his fellow citizens. An accomplished musician, Bob played lead guitar in a country and western band alongside Warren Davis and Leon Thomas. They brought joy to many through their performances at local events. Bob's love for music was only matched by his passion for the great outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, with a deep knowledge of the local landscape, particularly the fishing holes of Skiatook Lake—although a few were kept secret by his friends Ralph Hendryx and Earl Harrison. In the 1980s, Bob's voice became a familiar presence on the CB radio, where he was known as the "Skelly Man." His friendly banter and warm personality made him a beloved figure not just on the airwaves, but in every aspect of his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Letha Mae Kehler, his brother Fred Kehler, and his sisters Dorothy, Opal, Mae, Fae, Doris, Marie, and Goldie.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his devoted wife of 76 years, Leota Marie Kehler, his loving children Janet Barnes and her husband Gerald, and son Robert and his wife Roberta, all of whom are Skiatook residents. Bob's legacy will also live on through his six grandchildren, Doug, Kevin, Justin, Jennifer, Angel, and Bobbi; thirteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a community of friends who were touched by his presence.
Bob Kehler was a man who embodied the spirit of friendliness. His approachable demeanor, relentless service to his community, and the love he had for his family and friends made him a pillar of the Skiatook community. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his influence and the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Today, we honor a life well-lived, a man who dedicated himself to his family, his country, and his community. Bob's journey on earth has ended, but his story—a story of love, service, and the joy of music—will echo in the halls of Skiatook for generations to come. Bobby Gene Kehler will be dearly missed, but the melody of his life's work will play on forever.
