Betty Lorraine Herring Griggs

Betty Lorraine Herring Griggs, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Skiatook, Oklahoma, surrounded by her family on October 26, 2020.

One of six children, Betty was born on April 27, 1930 in Del Norte, Colorado to Enoch Leonard “Blacky” and Loda Myrtle (Upshaw) Black. As a young child, her parents moved the family to Skiatook, where she graduated from Skiatook Highschool in 1949. She met her husband Jack William Herring in Skiatook where they married on June 17, 1949 and raised their four children: Jonathan “Johnny” (Brenda), Carol Ann (Wm Scott), Jimmy, and Joyce (Jonathan). They were married for 46 years until Jack’s passing in 1995. Betty found Love again and married Charles “Buddy” Griggs on September 30, 2006 and were married for 14 years.

Betty lived a full and happy life as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, homemaker, and longstanding member of the Skiatook community. She was a member of the Skiatook Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) Chapter and active in her church, The First Presbyterian Church Of Skiatook, where she often volunteered, was a deacon, and sang alto in the choir. She kept a beautiful garden as a part of the Skiatook Garden Club. She was also in the Rodeo Club and loved to show her horses and ride. She loved to teach her grandchildren how to knit, go antiquing, and had a slight obsession with Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family.

Most of all she loved her family and instilled in all her children and grandchildren strong values that have served them well to this day. Her love, warm embrace, and sweet laugh will be dearly missed and will forever be in our hearts.

Betty is lovingly remembered by her children, husband Buddy, two stepchildren, sister Darlene Thomason, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, son Johnny, brothers Leonard Eugene and Sidney Leroy, sisters Loa Louise Black and Eleanor Eileen Rountree, and great grandson Ryder.

The funeral service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church Of Skiatook at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 3, 2020. Burial to follow immediately at Hillside Mission Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to Skiatook Police and Fire Departments.
